Lark's Brisk Reviews: Duke Nukem Forever
Duke Nukem Forever
Story:
Aliens return to get revenge on Duke for defeating them many moons ago. The first half of the plot is just an attempt to leave the city, but every time you do, your ship gets shot down until the script declares you've had enough. The second half is breaching a dam. And that's it.
Gameplay:
Its an first person shooter, but as a Duke Nukem game, it doesn't feel right. The clumsy controls and boring level design take away from an already disappointing experience. Levels are divided by either shooting lotsa baddies or solve simple puzzles, like emptying a minecart so you can push it along the track. The entire game is plagued with unnecessarily long load screens that split up small chunks of levels. The same load screens take up at least five minutes of your time whenever you wait to respawn after dying.
Sound:
Due to the loading screens taking forever to load, I can say that musics memorable. But not in a good way. Its a decent ambient track that gets ruined just through association. Other than that, the soundtrack isn't noteworthy, sound effects are rather generic, and overall voiceacting is passable. With the exception of Jon St. John lending his voice to Duke. I want to give points only because Gearbox threw in a soundboard for Duke in the main menu.
Replay Value:
Low. Its a generic shooter with no real reason for replay other than to get the higher difficulty achievements.
Duke Nukem Forever: 3/10

Duke Nukem is an intellectual masterpiece that redefines modern storytelling compared to Beyond.
